  • Snap - Homonyms Demystified

The English Language is one of the most confusing languages in the world - no question. Even to native speakers, it can be a life-long torment, let alone if you are trying to learn the language from scratch from a non-English speaking background.
One of the most confusing aspects is the constant use of words that mean more than one thing. How is a person to survive?
Then there is the case where the words that sound the same, have different meanings, different spellings and different grammatical contexts. When is a noun just a noun and a verb a verb?
From the youngest of primary schoolers to the oldest of the secondary schoolers, SNAP - Homonyms Demystified - is a welcome drink of water. It outlines each of the most common homonyms in our language and gives them life. It defines them, clarifies them, puts them into fun situations, assess the learning and understanding of the student and pits the words against one another.
It is an invaluable resource and perfect for those learning situations where the teacher can refer a student to the particular word they are having trouble with.
One of the most common ones of course, "There, their, they're". Aren't you tired of seeing that one spelt wrongly??

  • Phonics - Funny & Fab

We have a whole generation of readers who were raised on 'Phonic Awareness' as opposed to 'Phonic Recognition'.
And while it was all very well while it lasted, we now have teachers too who, through no fault of their own, can't recognise phonemes either, let alone teach them. And of course, the pendulum, as it tends to do, has swung full circle again and we now realise the
vital importance of phonic recognition.
Of course students can't be expected to 'remember' all the words in the dictionary! They do actually need a de-coding system. And of course the humble phoneme was there all along - sitting embarrassingly out of favour.
Well - it's back and it's no longer in the closet.
Phonics- Funny & Fab is a lighthearted and easy-going way to learn, group and identify  the sounds that are the building blocks of our rich and wonderful language. And there are no boring, dry enunciations on derivatives or Latin projections and so on.
It is a word attack group of exercises and lots of fun.

  • Journal Jams - Creative Writing Tasks

Remember the school days when stream of consciousness, free prose and diarising were the flavours to follow?
There was nothing wrong with that - they were great ideas - it just so happened that a lot of grammar, spelling, direction and style were lost in the process.
Again, that poor baby went flying out with the bathwater.
But one thing that has not passed with time or the ages, is the awareness that students need to be proficient in their writing skills and nothing strengthens their skills more than practice, practice, practice. But how to avoid tedium, repetition and the ever present moaning?
Make it fun. Let them do it in pairs, or groups or individually - and mark it.
In Journal Jams - Creative Writing Tasks - each student or group is asked to choose a topic for the day or lesson and go with it. The story is outlined in a sentence at the top and the student is able to use this as a springboard for the rest of the story.
Depending on the teacher, they may then act out their story, produce it on film, radio or whatever.
But it has to be edited - by the student, the buddy and the teacher. This is the greatest learning phase of the whole exercise.
They come to appreciate that if it doesn't make sense, then it becomes useless.
It is a very powerful learning tool and is ideally suited to the upper primary and lower secondary level.
Lesson Plans are included, as well Achievement Certificates and Assessment Indicators.

The whole history of the world has gone into the creation of your life. No-one else’s journey is the same as yours. Your story is absolutely unique. As a writer I am frequently told about the autobiography that people are itching to write—some have even tried to do it for themselves—and then been disappointed because they didn’t have the time or the skills to put it all together. And so a few sheets of paper and some photos sit in a dusty box at the top of the wardrobe gathering more dust. And their precious, wonderful story is never told. Well, now you can do it. You can have your story published. You can have it on your shelves in just a few weeks’ time. For private clients it would cost around $8000 to have this done. But I wanted something that was more accessible to people everywhere—this is an invaluable gift for and to yourself, your family and your friends. That is why we devised a system whereby we can streamline the whole process—where you can have your history written for you, complete with photos and captions, in a CD or a soft or hard cover book.
My brother died about 5 years ago from cancer. His daughters were 9 and 12. His widow said, “I thought I had more time. There was so much we were going to do.” He was gone from cancer at age 43. Now, his girls come to me to ask about the stories of his childhood. I tell them the best way I can—but I’m looking from the outside. I can’t tell his story … and now it’s too late.
